What is a Movement Type?

Movement type in SAP is a 3-digit code that is used to identify the type of material movement in the system. The movement type is used to determine the type of transaction being executed, such as goods receipt, goods issue, transfer posting, or stock transfer.

The movement type is an important part of the material management (MM) module in SAP, as it helps to keep track of the flow of goods in the system. The movement type is used to update inventory balances, track changes in material stock levels, and update accounting information.

Classification of Movement Types in SAP

Goods Receipt Movement Types:

These are movement types used to record the receipt of goods in the system, which could be due to the purchase of materials, production orders, or other sources.

Goods Issue Movement Types

These are movement types used to record the issuance of goods from the system, which could be due to consumption, sales, or other reasons.

Transfer Postings Movement Types

These are movement types used to record the transfer of materials from one location or plant to another.

303 Transfer posting plant to plant in two steps (Remove from storage)
305 Transfer posting plant to plant in two steps (In placing storage)
309 Merging of two materials
311 Transfer posting Storage location to Storage location in one plant in one step
303 Transfer posting Storage location to Storage location in one plant in two steps
315 Transfer posting Storage location to Storage location in one plant in two steps (In placing storage)
331 Withdraw of samples from Quality Inspection stock
333 Withdraw of samples from Unrestricted Stock
335 Withdraw of samples from Blocked Stock
411 Consignment stock into our own stock
501 Goods Receipt without PO into Unrestricted Stock
503 Goods Receipt Without PO into Quality Inspection stock
505 Goods Receipt without PO into Blocked Stock
511 Free of charge delivery from vendor (free samples from Vendor)
551 Scraping from Unrestricted Stock
553 Scraping from Quality Inspection stock
555 Scraping from Blocked Stock
561 Initial entry of stock into unrestricted Stock

Note: Book Stock means System Stock

Special Movement Types

These Movement Types in SAP are used for specific transactions that don't fit into the standard Goods Receipt or Goods Issue movement types.

122 Return goods to the Vendor
531 Goods Issue: Sales Order, Cost Object
551 Withdrawal for Vendor
561 Initial Entry of Stock Balances
901 Goods Receipt, No Purchase Order
901E Record the receipt of materials that were procured externally.
901F Record the receipt of materials against a production order.

These Special Movement Types are used to update inventory balances, track changes in material stock levels, and update accounting information in the system. They help to ensure accurate record-keeping of material movements in the company's supply chain.

Physical Inventory (PI) Movement Types:

These are movement types used to record changes in inventory due to physical inventory counts or adjustments.

702 Record a decrease in the physical inventory count.

Reversal Movement Types

Reversal Movement Types in SAP are used to reverse a previous inventory transaction that was recorded in the system.

707 Transfer if physical stock is greater than Books stock in case of Blocked stock
708 Transfer if physical stock is less than Books stock in case of Blocked stock

    In which case we use 501 movement type, during what kind of purchase, can anybody explain it with example ? and what is the difference between 122 and 161.. what exactly happens ?

    122 - return to vendor
    161 - GR for return PO i.e. a return PO would be required unlike the case of 122 mvt
